Snowboarding and Broken Wrists: Why Beginners Are at Risk and What Wrist Guards Do

A fall on an outstretched hand is the classic snowboard injury, and the first season is the riskiest. Here is why beginners break wrists, what wrist guards actually do, and how rehab goes after a distal radius fracture.

The North Shore mountains fill up with new snowboarders every winter, and a broken wrist is the injury that sends a lot of them to a clinic. The pattern is consistent: a fall on an outstretched hand, a sore or deformed wrist, and often a first or second season on the board. Knowing why beginners are at risk, what wrist guards actually do, and how rehab goes afterward helps you protect the wrist before the season and recover well if it does break.

Snowboarders break their wrists far more often than skiers, and beginners are most at risk because they fall more and fall less skilfully onto an outstretched hand. Wrist guards are supported by evidence as a way to reduce wrist injuries and fractures, though the evidence is not high quality, and they are a sensible precaution for new riders. Why snowboarders break wrists

The mechanism is built into the sport. Both feet are strapped to the board, so when a rider loses balance there is no step to catch themselves. The instinctive reaction is to throw a hand out to break the fall. That is a fall on an outstretched hand, sometimes shortened to FOOSH, and it drives force through the wrist while it is bent backward. That loading pattern is the classic way to fracture the distal radius, the lower end of the larger forearm bone, right at the wrist.

The size of the difference between the two sports is striking. A study of wrist fractures in skiers and snowboarders over 40 seasons found snowboarders fractured their wrists at about 18 times the rate of skiers. Skiers hold poles and can plant a foot to catch a stumble, which changes how they fall. Snowboarders cannot, and the wrist pays for it.

Why beginners are most at risk

The wrist fractures are not spread evenly across riders. New and younger riders carry most of the risk. In that same 40-season study, less experienced snowboarders and younger riders were at higher risk of wrist fracture. Other injury data on snowboarders show that a large share of injured riders are beginners or intermediates, and that first-time riders are more likely to be hurt by a simple fall than experienced riders are.

The reason is straightforward. Beginners fall more, because they are still learning to control the board. They also fall less skilfully, because they have not yet learned to keep a hand from taking the full impact or to roll with a fall. Put those together and a routine tumble on a beginner slope is more likely to end in a broken wrist than the same fall would for an experienced rider. This is the opposite of what many people assume, that injuries happen on hard terrain to advanced riders. For wrists, the risky moment is the first few days on the board.

What wrist guards actually do

Wrist guards are the most direct prevention, and the evidence backs them. A systematic review of wrist guards in snowboarders found that wearing them was linked with a large reduction in the risk of wrist injury (relative risk 0.23), wrist fracture (relative risk 0.29), and wrist sprain (relative risk 0.17). In plain terms, riders wearing wrist guards had far fewer wrist injuries than those without.

Two honest caveats come with that. First, the review's authors noted the underlying studies were not high quality, so the exact size of the benefit is uncertain even though the direction is clear. Second, to put the benefit in everyday terms, the review estimated that about 50 snowboarders would need to wear wrist guards to prevent one wrist injury. That is not a reason to skip them. For a low-cost piece of gear with a clear protective signal, especially for a beginner who falls often, wrist guards are a reasonable precaution. Dedicated wrist guards or wrist-guard gloves are the usual options, and for new riders they belong on the list next to a helmet.

How this differs from the classic ski knee injury

Skiing and snowboarding tend to break different parts of the body, which is worth knowing if you do both. Skiing loads the knee, because the boot is fixed to a ski that can twist the leg, and the classic ski injury is a knee ligament sprain. We cover that pattern in ski knee injuries on the North Shore. Snowboarding loads the wrist, for the reasons above, because both feet are fixed and the hand catches the fall. Same mountains, different injury, different prevention. A knee brace does nothing for a snowboarder's wrist, and wrist guards do nothing for a skier's knee, so the gear that helps depends on the sport.

If the wrist does break

If a fall breaks the wrist, the first job is medical. A suspected wrist fracture needs assessment and imaging, because the treatment depends on the type of fracture and whether the bones have moved. Some distal radius fractures are managed in a cast, and some need surgery to hold the bones in place. That decision belongs to a doctor or surgeon, not to a physiotherapist.

Not every sore wrist after a fall is a fracture, and telling a fracture from a sprain is not something to guess at. A wrist that stays painful, swollen, or weak after a fall on the hand deserves to be checked rather than pushed through.

Rehab after a distal radius fracture

Recovery is more than waiting for the cast to come off. Once the fracture is stable and your doctor clears movement, physiotherapy helps the wrist recover its function in stages.

Restore movement first. After a period in a cast, the wrist and forearm are usually stiff. Early rehab focuses on regaining wrist and forearm range of motion and settling any lingering swelling, within the limits your doctor sets.

Rebuild strength and grip. As movement returns, the plan adds strengthening for the wrist, forearm, and grip, which are often noticeably weaker after time in a cast. Grip strength is a common goal, because it drives so much hand function.

Load it for what you do. The final stage is building the wrist's tolerance to the loads it will face, whether that is your job, daily tasks, or getting back on the board next season. This graded loading is the same principle we use for other wrist problems, such as wrist pain from yoga and weight bearing.

Recovery timelines depend on the fracture, whether it needed surgery, your age, and how early rehab starts, so a single number does not fit everyone. The realistic goal is steady progress through those stages rather than a fixed date.

When to get it assessed

If you have fallen on your hand snowboarding and the wrist is painful, swollen, deformed, or weak, get it assessed and imaged promptly, because a missed fracture can heal poorly. After a confirmed fracture, book physiotherapy once your doctor confirms the fracture is stable and clears you to move it.
