What it is

Kinesiology & Active Rehabilitation — North Vancouver at Medstar.

Kinesiology — practiced by a Practicing Kinesiologist (PKin) registered with the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) — is the science of human movement applied to rehabilitation. A PKin holds a 4-year university degree in kinesiology and is the regulated profession ICBC specifies for delivery of its Active Rehabilitation benefit on most motor-vehicle claims.

Where physiotherapy diagnoses the injury and starts the early phase of recovery, kinesiology owns the middle-to-late rehab phase: rebuilding the strength, endurance, power, balance, and movement quality that the injury cost you. The work happens in the clinic's rehab gym space — TRX, kettlebells, plyometric boxes, resistance bands, the equipment your tissue actually needs to remodel under load.

At Medstar, kinesiology is most commonly delivered in three contexts: ICBC Active Rehab claims (where ICBC pre-approves a course of supervised exercise rehabilitation after motor-vehicle injury), post-surgical conditioning (the loading and return-to-sport phase after ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, hip arthroscopy, or other ortho procedures), and return-to-sport programming for athletes who've completed their physiotherapy and need a structured ramp-up before going back to full training.

How it works

Inside a session.

Initial visit runs 60 minutes. It starts with a movement assessment — what the body actually does under load, not just what it can do passively on a treatment table. The PKin tests functional movements relevant to your goal (squat, hinge, lunge, step-down, single-leg balance, push, pull, carry), notes asymmetries and limitations, and identifies the specific capacities that need rebuilding.

Follow-up sessions are 45–60 minutes, one-on-one in the clinic's rehab gym. Each session has a structured plan progressed from the last — the kinesiologist coaches movement quality in real time, provides tactile cues for alignment, monitors load tolerance, and adjusts the next session's prescription based on how this one went. Heavy emphasis on quality over volume.

You go home with a programmed plan of 2–4 exercises to do between sessions. Most patients see their kinesiologist 1–2 times per week through the active rehab phase, then taper to bi-weekly or self-managed maintenance once capacity is rebuilt. We coordinate notes with your physiotherapist (and surgeon if relevant) so the whole arc stays aligned.

What to expect

Most ICBC Active Rehab pathways run 8–12 visits across 8–12 weeks. Post-surgical and return-to-sport programs are individually scoped — anywhere from 6 to 20+ visits depending on the procedure and the sport. Measurable capacity changes typically appear in the first 3–4 weeks; sport-readiness milestones land in the back half of the program.

Common questions

About kinesiology and active rehab.

What's the difference between a kinesiologist and a personal trainer?+

A Practicing Kinesiologist (PKin) holds a 4-year university degree in kinesiology — the science of human movement, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, and exercise prescription for rehabilitation populations. They're registered with the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK), which sets professional standards and continuing-education requirements. Personal trainers typically hold weekend or short-course certifications focused on general fitness training. The PKin scope is rehabilitation: post-injury, post-surgical, chronic-condition, and return-to-sport populations. ICBC specifically requires a PKin (not a personal trainer) for its Active Rehab benefit.

Does ICBC really cover kinesiology — and what's the catch?+

Yes. Under Enhanced Care, ICBC pre-approves a benefit-specific course of Active Rehabilitation with a registered kinesiologist for most active claims, with no referral and no upfront cost — direct-billed by us to ICBC. The 'catch' is that you have to actually attend the sessions; ICBC has no obligation to extend or replace missed appointments without medical justification. Beyond the pre-approved count, your case manager can authorise additional visits if clinically warranted — we provide the supporting documentation.

Do I need to be at a certain fitness level before I start?+

No. The kinesiologist meets you wherever you are — including patients who've never been to a gym, who are post-surgical in a brace, who are elderly and rebuilding from a fall, or who are elite athletes finishing a return-to-sport phase. The exercises are individually prescribed and progressed; you'll never be doing something inappropriate for your current capacity.

Is it just exercise — what makes this different from joining a gym?+

Three things: clinical assessment that targets the specific capacities your case requires (rather than general fitness), in-the-moment coaching of movement quality that you can't get from a YouTube video or a generic program, and real-time progression based on how your tissue actually responds to load — not a fixed 12-week template. Once that work is done and you've built independence, joining a regular gym (or returning to your usual training) is often the right next step.

How do I know if I need physio or kinesiology — or both?+

Physiotherapy is the right first step when there's diagnostic uncertainty, acute pain that needs hands-on treatment, or post-surgical care in the immediate phase. Kinesiology takes over (or works alongside) when the case shifts into the loading and reconditioning phase — when the pain has settled, the diagnosis is clear, and the limiting factor is strength, endurance, or movement quality. Most cases benefit from physio first, then transition to kinesiology with a small overlap. We coordinate this directly across the team.

What should I wear and bring to a session?+

Athletic clothing you can move freely in — shorts or athletic pants, t-shirt or tank top, indoor athletic shoes. A water bottle is helpful. If you're working through an ICBC claim, bring your claim number; if you're post-surgical, bring your surgeon's post-op protocol so the kinesiologist can align the work with those restrictions.

Is kinesiology covered by extended health insurance?+

Coverage varies more than for physiotherapy and massage. Some extended-health plans include kinesiology as a separate paramedical service; others only cover it under an Active Rehabilitation benefit that requires physician referral; many don't cover it at all outside ICBC and WorkSafeBC contexts. Check your specific policy wording — we'll provide a paid receipt suitable for reimbursement either way.

Treatment suitability is determined case-by-case during assessment; not every service is appropriate for every presentation. If you have a medical implant, are pregnant, take blood thinners, or have an active infection, tell your physiotherapist before treatment. Physiotherapy at Medstar Sport Physio & Health is provided by physiotherapists registered with the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia (CPTBC).
