Senior & older-adult physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for Seniors — North Vancouver

Physiotherapy built around the goals that matter at this stage of life: staying steady on your feet, staying independent, and getting back to the walks, gardening, and grandkids that a fall or a new joint pain put on hold. Serving seniors across North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Vancouver.

What it is

Physiotherapy for Seniors — North Vancouver at Medstar.

Physiotherapy for seniors is not a different treatment technique — it's the same physiotherapy toolkit (manual therapy, exercise prescription, education) applied with a different lens: what matters most for an older adult is usually staying safe on your feet, protecting a joint that's starting to wear, or getting back to full function after a hip or knee replacement, not returning to competitive sport.

We see three groups most often. The first is fall-prevention and balance: people who've had a near-fall or an actual fall, or who've noticed their balance isn't what it used to be, and want to get ahead of it before an injury happens. The second is joint-related: osteoarthritis in the knee, hip, or shoulder that's limiting daily activities like stairs, gardening, or a daily walk. The third is post-surgical: recovery after a hip replacement, knee replacement, or other orthopaedic surgery, where the physiotherapy work is what determines how much range of motion and strength actually comes back.

The pace and approach are adjusted to the person, not to a generic protocol. That means accounting for other health conditions (heart or lung conditions, osteoporosis, diabetes), medications that affect balance or healing, and realistic goals: independence around the house, a specific activity you want back, or simply confidence that your body can handle daily life again.

How it works

Inside a session.

The first visit runs about an hour. We ask about your health history, any falls or near-falls, medications, and what specifically you want back — a walk to the seawall, gardening, playing with grandkids, getting in and out of the car without help. We then assess balance (standing, walking, turning), joint range of motion, and strength in the areas that matter for your goal, and test a few functional movements: sit-to-stand, stair negotiation, single-leg stance.

From there we build a plan that combines hands-on treatment for any stiff or painful joints with a progressive exercise programme — usually starting seated or supported and building toward standing, unsupported balance work as tolerated. Every exercise is demonstrated and practiced in-clinic before it becomes part of your home programme, so you're never doing something unsupervised that you haven't already done safely with us.

For post-surgical cases (hip or knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, and similar), we work from your surgeon's specific protocol and timeline, coordinating range-of-motion and weight-bearing progressions with what your surgical team has cleared.

What to expect

Fall-prevention and balance cases typically run 6-10 visits over 6-8 weeks before shifting to a maintenance schedule. Osteoarthritis management is often ongoing, with a more intensive initial block followed by periodic check-ins. Post-surgical joint recovery follows the surgeon's timeline, commonly 3-6 months from surgery to full return of function, with physiotherapy visits concentrated in the first 6-12 weeks.

Common questions

About physiotherapy for seniors.

Do I need a doctor's referral to start physiotherapy?

No referral is required to book a physiotherapy assessment in BC. If you're using an extended health plan, check your specific policy — some plans require a physician's referral for reimbursement even though physiotherapists can see you directly. Post-surgical patients typically arrive with a surgeon's protocol, which we're glad to work from directly.

I'm not an athlete — is a 'sport physio' clinic really the right fit?+

Yes. The physiotherapy toolkit — manual therapy, movement assessment, progressive exercise — is the same regardless of whether the goal is a return to competitive sport or a return to gardening and grandkids. What changes is the pace, the exercises chosen, and how we account for other health conditions. Several of our physiotherapists work with older adults regularly, alongside our sport-injury caseload.

What if I have other health conditions, like heart disease, osteoporosis, or diabetes?+

We factor these into the assessment and the exercise plan. Osteoporosis affects which loading positions are safe for the spine and hips; some cardiac and respiratory conditions affect how we pace intensity; diabetes can affect healing timelines and sensation. Tell us about your full health history at the first visit so the plan is built around it, not despite it. For anything outside physiotherapy's scope, we'll flag it for your family doctor or specialist.

How is fall-prevention physiotherapy different from just 'doing more exercise'?+

A proper fall-risk assessment looks at specific factors: static and dynamic balance, reaction time, leg strength, vision-dependence for balance, and gait pattern, then targets the ones that are actually contributing to your risk. Generic exercise helps, but it doesn't identify which specific deficit is putting you at risk, or track whether it's actually improving. We reassess periodically so you can see the numbers move, not just take it on faith.

I just had a hip or knee replacement. When should physiotherapy start?+

Follow your surgeon's specific timeline; most hospitals start range-of-motion work within days of surgery, sometimes before discharge. Outpatient physiotherapy with us typically begins once you're home, following the exact protocol and precautions your surgical team has given you (weight-bearing status, movement restrictions, brace use). Bring your discharge paperwork or protocol sheet to the first visit.

Is this covered by extended health or by MSP?+

MSP (BC's public health plan) does not cover physiotherapy. Most extended health plans through a former employer, retirement benefits, or a private plan include a physiotherapy allowance — we direct-bill the major providers so there's often no upfront cost. Some plans require a physician's referral for reimbursement; check your specific policy or ask us to help confirm your coverage before your first visit.

What should I wear or bring to the first visit?+

Comfortable clothing you can move in — pants or shorts that allow us to see your knee and hip movement, flat supportive shoes or the shoes you normally walk in. Bring any mobility aids you currently use (cane, walker), a list of current medications, and your surgeon's protocol sheet if you're post-surgical.
