Lonsdale · Service area
Sport physiotherapy for Lonsdale, five minutes up the road from the Quay.
We sit on Marine Drive, the same corridor that connects Lower Lonsdale, the Shipyards, and Central Lonsdale to the rest of the North Shore. For most of Lonsdale that is a 5-minute drive, a short bus ride along Marine, or a 15-minute walk down from Central Lonsdale to 1325 Marine Drive.
Who we see from Lonsdale
A short drive, a familiar caseload.
Lonsdale is the younger half of the North Shore, and the density makes it feel that way. The City of North Vancouver counted just over 58,000 residents at the 2021 census, up 9.9% from 2016, and most of that growth landed in the Lower Lonsdale and Shipyards condo build-out. The result is a Marine Drive corridor that hums from 6am with run-club groups on the seawall, queue-ups outside the gyms along Esplanade, and SeaBus commuters cutting down to the Quay for the 7:02 sailing to Waterfront. That mix shapes the caseload we see every week.
Running overuse is the single most common pattern out of this area. Patellofemoral pain, IT band irritation, achilles and posterior tibial tendinopathy turn up in cycles tied to the spring race build along the seawall and Mosquito Creek path. Most of it traces back to weekly mileage increasing faster than the tissue can adapt — a classic load error rather than a structural one. Strength deficits in the hip and calf usually show up on assessment too, which is where the rehab plan lives.
Desk-worker neck and upper-back pain is the second steady stream. The SeaBus-and-laptop crowd commuting to downtown desk jobs cycles through cervicogenic headaches, thoracic stiffness, and shoulder impingement that shows up after a quiet winter and a sudden return to overhead pressing or pull-ups. The treatment isn't just hands-on work — it's the desk setup at home, the load plan in the gym, and a graded return to whatever sport you've been trying to keep through the year.
The other consistent stream is post-MVA referrals. Lonsdale Avenue, Marine Drive, and the on-ramps to Highway 1 are higher-volume corridors and we see a steady flow of patients in the early weeks after a rear-end collision with whiplash, low back pain, or post-concussion symptoms. Most of those people are on the ICBC pre-approved pathway, and we direct-bill so the first block of care doesn't sit on a credit card.
Getting to Marine Drive
How Lonsdale gets to the clinic.
By car
Off-peak, the drive from Lower Lonsdale and the Shipyards is roughly 5 minutes — west along Esplanade or 3rd Street, then onto Marine Drive. From Central Lonsdale (around 13th to 19th) it is usually under 10 minutes down the hill. From Upper Lonsdale and the Highway 1 area, allow 10 to 15 depending on the time of day. Rush hour on Marine through Lonsdale Avenue can add a few minutes; mid-morning and after 6pm are the easier windows.
By Blue Bus
The R2 Marine Drive RapidBus replaced most of the old 239 corridor in April 2020 and now runs east-west along Marine Drive every few minutes at peak. The 240 (Lynn Valley/Downtown) also crosses Marine at Lonsdale Avenue and connects through to Vancouver. From the SeaBus terminal at Lonsdale Quay, a connecting bus to Marine Drive takes only a few minutes. Confirm current routing on the TransLink site — bus numbering and frequencies update from time to time.
Parking
There is a small rear lot at 1325 Marine Drive plus street parking along Marine Drive — check posted signage for time limits, which vary by block. For Lower Lonsdale residents the flat walk along the Spirit Trail and Esplanade is often easier than circling for parking.
Referral patterns
Where Lonsdale patients usually come from.
Lions Gate Hospital sits at the top of Central Lonsdale and is the North Shore trauma intake — 268 beds operated by Vancouver Coastal Health, with the ER taking the bulk of the catchment's acute referrals. We see a steady flow of post-discharge patients from Lions Gate — ACL reconstructions, rotator cuff repairs, fracture follow-ups out of cast, and post-concussion rehab that started on the ward and needs an outpatient handoff. Bring the discharge paperwork or surgical report to the first visit so the physiotherapist works from what was actually done, not memory of what the consult might have said. We coordinate back with the referring surgeon when the protocol calls for it.
Family physicians along Central Lonsdale, walk-in clinics near Lonsdale and 13th, and the sports-medicine practices clustered around the hospital regularly refer for active rehab after imaging or specialist review. The common pattern is a low back or shoulder presentation that didn't settle in the first two weeks, an MRI ordered, and a referral once the structural picture is clearer. Self-referral is also welcome — no GP note is required for physiotherapy in BC. The physiotherapist screens for red flags at the first visit regardless of how you arrived.
ICBC referrals from Lonsdale are common given the corridor traffic, and we direct-bill the pre-approved course of care. WorkSafeBC claims from the construction sites along the Lonsdale build-out, retail and hospitality staff in Lower Lonsdale, and trades on the Highway 1 corridor are also direct-billed under current pre-approval. Bring the claim number and the date of injury to the first visit — the front desk handles the rest. For more on what the first week after a crash looks like, the ICBC recovery hub on the site walks through the steps in order.

Services that fit the area
Which Medstar services Lonsdale patients use most.
The mix here skews toward sport physiotherapy with IMS (intramuscular stimulation) for runners and gym-goers, manual therapy and active rehab for desk-worker neck and shoulder, shockwave for stubborn achilles and plantar fasciitis from the seawall regulars, and high-power Class IV laser as a layer on top of loading. Registered massage therapy is a frequent add-on for the SeaBus commuter caseload — thoracic and suboccipital work that supports what the physiotherapist is doing on the table. Kinesiology-led active rehab is the bridge from the treatment room back to running, lifting, or whatever sport you are trying to keep through the year. We also see consistent demand for custom orthotics from runners loading the foot hard on the seawall and Mosquito Creek path.
Lonsdale FAQs
Questions we hear from Lonsdale patients.
How long does it take to get to the clinic from Lonsdale Quay?
By bus along Marine Drive, a few minutes once you're on. By car off-peak, around 5 minutes from the SeaBus terminal to 1325 Marine Drive. On foot it is roughly a 25-30 minute walk along the Spirit Trail and Esplanade — most people prefer the bus or a short rideshare. If you're coming straight off the SeaBus after work, the connecting bus along Marine Drive runs frequently and drops you within walking distance of the front door.
Is there parking at the clinic if I drive down from Central Lonsdale?
Yes. There is a rear lot at 1325 Marine Drive and street parking on Marine Drive. Check posted signage for daytime time limits — they vary by block. If parking is a concern because of mobility or post-op restrictions, flag it when you book and the front desk will point you to the closest spot. Most Central Lonsdale patients find the drive down the hill takes less time than circling for a meter in Lower Lonsdale.
I commute by SeaBus and only have time after work. Are evening appointments available?
The clinic is open until 7:30pm Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings. Evening slots fill up first, so book a week or two ahead through the Jane App page where possible. If your SeaBus sailing lands you on the North Shore around 5:30 or 6pm, a connecting bus along Marine Drive gets you to the door with a few minutes to change — useful detail for the days you don't want to drive in from downtown.
I was discharged from Lions Gate Hospital — can you take the referral?
Yes. Bring the discharge paperwork or surgical report to the first visit. The physiotherapist will review the findings against their own assessment and plan against the same goals. If the surgeon's protocol calls for protected motion in the early weeks, we match the rehab phase to what was prescribed and coordinate back as you progress. Lions Gate is a five-minute drive uphill from our clinic; most discharged patients are seen here within the first week or two.
Do you direct-bill ICBC if I was in a crash on Lonsdale Avenue or the Highway 1 on-ramp?
Yes. We direct-bill ICBC under the current pre-approved treatment guidelines. Bring your claim number to the first visit and we will handle the billing. The /icbc hub walks through the first week if you are still figuring out the next step, and the /icbc/whiplash-recovery page covers what to expect if the rear-end collision left you with neck pain or headaches. Most people start within the first two weeks of the accident date — earlier is usually better.
