What it is

Understanding your balance issues / falls.

Balance issues show up as feeling unsteady, wobbly, or dizzy when you stand, walk, or change position — and they raise the odds of a near-miss or an actual fall. Falls are a leading cause of injury and even death in older adults, and a single one can mean a fracture, a head injury, or a lasting hit to mobility and confidence. The knock-on effect is often the bigger problem: people start avoiding stairs, uneven ground, and outings, and that loss of activity makes everything worse.

Steady standing and walking depend on several systems working together. Your inner ear (the vestibular system) senses head position, your eyes judge distance and spot obstacles, and sensors in your muscles and joints tell your brain where your body is. Strong legs and quick reactions do the rest. When one or more of these falters, balance suffers.

Plenty of things can throw it off: inner-ear disorders, declining vision, muscle weakness or joint pain, neurological conditions like stroke or Parkinson's, and medications that cause drowsiness or dizziness. Aging itself gradually trims muscle strength, reaction time, and sensory feedback. The encouraging part is that several of these — strength, gait, reaction time, vestibular function — respond well to training, which is exactly what fall-prevention physiotherapy targets.

What to expect

Balance improves with consistent practice, and most people notice they feel steadier and more confident within a few weeks of regular training, with strength and reaction time continuing to build over a couple of months. We start where you are and progress the challenge safely, never pushing into territory that risks a fall during a session. If your unsteadiness points to a medical cause that needs a doctor's input — a medication issue, a neurological sign, or a vestibular problem beyond our scope — we'll flag it and coordinate with your physician rather than training around something that needs investigating.

Common questions

About balance issues / falls.

Is feeling unsteady just a normal part of getting older?+

Some decline in strength and reaction time comes with age, but feeling unsteady or fearing falls is not something you simply have to accept. Balance is trainable at any age — strength, gait, and reaction work reliably improve steadiness in older adults. Treating it as inevitable is exactly how people lose independence they could have kept.

I haven't fallen yet, but I'm worried I might. Is it worth coming in?+

Absolutely — that's the ideal time. Addressing unsteadiness before a fall happens is far better than recovering from a fracture afterward. A focused assessment can pinpoint the specific weaknesses or hazards raising your risk, and a tailored program builds the strength and confidence to head off that first fall.

My dizziness comes when I move my head or roll over in bed. Is that the same thing?+

That pattern often points to a specific inner-ear cause called BPPV (positional vertigo), which is treated differently from general balance weakness — usually with a repositioning manoeuvre rather than strength work. We assess which is driving your symptoms and treat accordingly. See our positional dizziness page for more on that.

Will I have to do anything I'm not comfortable with?+

No. Every exercise is matched to your current ability and done with appropriate support so you're safe throughout. We progress the challenge gradually as you get steadier, and you set the pace. The whole point is to build confidence, not to push you into something that feels precarious.
