What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis stands as a prevalent source of heel discomfort. It entails the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a durable, fibrous strip of tissue spanning the underside of the foot. This band connects to the heel bone (calcaneus) and the base of the toes, contributing vital support to the foot's arch and playing a significant role in regular walking mechanics.

The plantar fascia experiences heightened tension and strain when weight is placed on the foot, such as when standing. Additionally, this tension increases when you push off with the ball of the foot and toes, movements inherent to normal walking and running. Over time or due to excessive use, the fascia may lose some of its elasticity and resilience, leading to irritation during everyday activities.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis:

Plantar fasciitis can be attributed to various causes, leading to inflammation and pain in the fascia. These contributing factors include:

1. Increased Activity Level: Engaging in higher levels of physical activity, such as starting a new walking or running regimen, can strain the plantar fascia and trigger inflammation.

2. Foot Structure or Shape: The natural structure and shape of the foot can influence the development of plantar fasciitis. Certain foot types, like flat feet or high arches, may be more prone to this condition.

3. Surface Conditions: The type of surface you stand, walk, or run on can play a role. Hard, uneven, or non-supportive surfaces can increase the stress on the plantar fascia.

4. Footwear: The choice of footwear is crucial. Ill-fitting or unsupportive shoes can contribute to plantar fasciitis, while shoes with proper arch support and cushioning can help prevent it.

5. Body Weight: Carrying excess body weight can place additional strain on the plantar fascia, increasing the risk of inflammation and pain.

These factors can act independently or in combination, making it important to address them to prevent or manage plantar fasciitis effectively.
